Can the Sites Powering the Olympics Handle the Traffic

By David West on 29/04/2024 21:49 UTC

Concerns have cropped up as to whether the cloud service hired by the London 2012 website will be able to handle the expected traffic.

Yottaa, a firm that analyzes performance of websites, has come out saying the London 2012 website is not ready for the 1 billion expected people wanting to view the site during the three weeks of the Olympics. The sites images, javascripts, and such are too large to sustain a huge traffic load according to the company, despite London 2012 contracting with a cloud service to manage the load. Yottaa also says the NBC Olympics site, though it will have less traffic, is just as vulnerable.

SOASTA, the cloud company contracted by the IOC for its services utilizing Amazone and Microsoft cloud connections, disputes these claims. They say the sites are the best tested sites in Olympics history and they will handle the load. SOASTA claims they spent over six months with traffic simulations to guarantee the performance will not degrade for users during the events, even with multiple live streams.
