Imagining Non-Existent Sequels

By David West on 29/04/2024 21:49 UTC

Numerous websites have been speculating about sequels which will never see the light of day. Can we please stop?

The latest of these is Planescape:Torment, the Dungeons & Dragons themed Planescape world which has been one of the highest acclaimed D & D games ever made. The old designer of the game has speculated how a sequel would have been built for the game.

Nice and all, except Planescape was jettisoned by Wizards of the Coast when they took over TSR and created 3rd Edition of the paper and pencil game. Planescape helped perpetuate the 2nd edition line during the slump TSR went through, but was not renewed. Now, with 4th edition out with no Planescape, and a 5th version on the way, Planescape will not be revised as of this time.

Thus, any speculation about what a next version of Planescape:Torment would result in is just that: speculation. Chris Avellone, who this author happens to know from long ago when I wrote for Hero Games at the same time Chris Avellone did, would love to create a Kickstarter for the project. But Chris does not own the license, and Wizards of the Coast would have to give him permission to do so. Given Wizard's ties to Turbine and D&D Online, I just don't see Chris's company Obsidian getting the rights soon.

We went through something similar last week with the revelations about Project:Copernicus being designed as free to play. This sort of speculation is a bit late, since the company is dead. Hopefully, someone will purchase the IP at some point and get the game made. Until then, it is again only speculation.
