This headset is one of Roccat's mainstream units that has set itself up to be one of the best in gaming. Roccat's Kave headset has six speakers over the ear with its own equalizer that can adjust to best suit what game your playing. In 5.1 Dolby surround sound, you truly immerse yourself in the gameplay while wearing these.
This headset sets itself as being one of the best affordable headsets in the midrange market.
The look of the headset itself is made of high grade plastic. However, it can take punishment over time and still work without issue. It comes with the three comfort pads that may take some getting use to, when you first wear it. People with glasses may want to avoid this headset as the ear cup may bring you some discomfort.
When it comes to sound, the Roccat Kave works really well in giving Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Allowing you to hear where footsteps are coming from gives you the edge in gameplay. Gunshots could be heard with pinpoint accuracy.
The microphone is good for what it is, but feels like it could be better with a hinge instead of a socket connection. Some people after having reviewed this headset have had to ask for a replacement because of this mounting mechanism. I did not have this problem, but it is one to look out for when thinking about getting this headset.
Setup was simple, with color coding to help make installation easy. But getting the computer to recognize a new headset and getting to work was a bit of hit and miss.
The positives with the headset are the clear sound input from the speaker system used, as well as the midranged price tag on the unit. The newer XTD version has Bluetooth connectivity, allowing for the headset to be connected to mobile devices, as well as the computer. For those of you who get tangled in your headset wires, this is a definite plus.
The negatives are the plastic-looking build and though it feels solid, some discomfort at first takes some getting used to when wearing the headset. The headset can take a beating, however, and still work unlike many models of headsets out on the market that are far more expensive.
The Roccat Kave retails for about £80 and the XTD about £142 on Amazon.
A really good mid-ranged headset that sets itself up to be a contender.
My ratings for the Roccat 5.1 Head set:
Build: 6/10. Even though is well-built, it isn't for those wearing glasses or are bothered by the over-the-ear cups design, or have issues with the non-hinged microphone.
Sound: 9/10. With the six speakers, it gives crisp clear sounds to the wearer and full immersion of gameplay or while watching a film.
Appearance: 7/10. With its matte black finish, the Roccats has a sort of stealth look which appeals. The only leds are where the mic boom is located and on the tip of the mic when the mic is on mute.
Overall: It a really good mid-ranged headset that sets itself up to be a contender. The more updated version of the headset, the XTD, gives more for comfort and even more to the gamer with accessibility, but with a bigger price tag.
