TrekWeb Jumping to Conclusions on Khan

By David West on 29/04/2024 21:49 UTC

TrekWeb has put out an article claiming 'Benedict Cumberbatch confirms he is Khan', but the quote says nothing of the sort.

Here is the actual question and quote:

Going back to Star Trek 2, there’s been lots of speculation about your character...

Yep, it’s yet another thing I can’t talk about [laughs]. I’ll tell you this, it’s iconic and it’s exciting. I’m bored of denying that it’s Khan now, because people keep saying it.

The only thing Cumberbatch is saying in this quote is he's bored of having to deny it to each and every interviewer, and every fan who asks the question to him. He is not confirming he is Khan at all in this quote. He could well be Gary Mitchell, the crewman turned god. He could be Tremaine. He could be any number of a myriad of characters, including Khan Noonien Singh. His quote does not 'confirm' anything.

Again, this is the age old problem, or so it seems, as what passes as journalism these days. Talking Points Memo, Huffington Post, and others have fallen into similar traps in reading more than what was spoken, or jumping to conclusions. For TrekWeb to do this, and this author has met those behind TrekWeb at Star Trek Las Vegas, disappoints me.
