Nexon America CEO Daniel Kim made a bold statement in a GamesIndustry.biz interview saying  "Console developers are starting to realize that as well, that unless they make accommodations or think about changing their own business model they're going to quickly go the way of the dinosaurs".

I am shocked someone in the industry would say something like that.  It is bold statement to say so early on in the game. Free-to-play is a great model but most people look at it as a last resort to make money.  How many times have you downloaded a free-to-play game and never picked it up after playing it the initial time?

Saying consoles are going to die if they don't go to a free-to-play model is just a dumb statement in my opinion.  But don't get me wrong, I like some points about Free-to-play.  Having the option to buy stages of a game is a great idea.  A problem will exist, however, with people thinking they have gotten cheated out of their money if they didn't like the content.

It comes down to why your game company put time and money into a free-to-play game and you are not making any profit off of it.  It may have been because people do not like your art style, your gameplay, or the overall feel of your game. I do love this statement from the interview, "It's really hard to beat free-to-play as an offering," Kim said. "I know it's tough for [console developers] to just cut off hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue to say 'OK, we're going to go free-to-play and make our bed here,' because that's going to piss off a lot of people who they already have an existing business relationship with."

So tell me, should consoles go Free-to-play or will they die out if they don't adopt this model?
