If you, like this author, grew up during the rise of popularity of Dungeons and Dragons, you probably remember the name of Jack Chick. Chick, who saw Satanic influences in everything and anything, took a particular dislike of D&D, published initially by Tactical Studies Rules (TSR) and Gary Gygax. Chick wrote little comic books screeds devoid of reality, and sent hundreds to churches to decry all sorts of subjects. The most famous one, though, was Dark Dungeons - a 22 page micro comic trying to show D&D led to black magic, demon worship, or worse.
The author had to deal with parents who got a hold of the lies to keep playing his hobby, as did a number of friends. All sorts of articles of half-truths permeated the media during this time, all fueled by these 'Chick Tracks' as they are now called.
Someone has finally gotten together funding through kickstarter to actually make a movie based on this ridiculous comic. Unsurprisingly, the movie is premiering at the convention made famous by Dungeons and Dragons, GenCon, in August. The man who put together the funding and money for this decided to film the movie not as a parody, but straight from the comic. Frankly, this makes things more telling that people STILL believe those Chick Tracks to be true after 35 years.
The anti-Satan zealots have moved on to Vampire: The Masquarade and Minds Eye Theater since, but they are still out there and many are behind the anti-video game lobby we at Senshudo.tv have been fighting. So, seeing this movie is worth your time even if you never picked up a pen and paper role playing game.
