The E3 floor this year has been absolutely packed with VR, AR and anything that could slightly be considered an accessory to them. We knew it would be the year that the market truly gets competitive and we were not disappointed. One of the many manufacturers on the floor was Vuzix, offering VR headsets with a slight twist. With their latest offering, the iWear, they provide portability and compatibility in a single unit.
By taking advantage of a generic HDMI-in setup, they are able to allow nearly any device to connect in with no trouble, which is quite an impressive statement. It roughly works out as a 130" screen placed just 10 feet away as a comparable experience and having that kind of setup in such a small and light package is truly impressive. While there were a few notable issues with correct fit, I would imagine this would be remedied relatively easily via a slightly time-consuming alteration to the head band holding everything in place.
One thing to be noted, the other headsets on the market are typically catering specifically to just one market (gaming being the typical example). This is one of the only units that is capable of being directly plug and play with anything gaming, video or audio via the built in headphones. While it was impossible to test all of this functionality directly, watch this space for when we hopefully get a unit to perform a full review on.
