SCS Software have released their popular goods delivery simulator on Mac OS X via the Steam platform. The simulator, released in October 2012 had been reportedly difficult to get to work on Mac because of ‘constantly evolving code’, however SCS Software are proud that their largely European roadtrip simulator is finally supported by Windows, Linux and now Mac. This milestone means that all editions are sharing the same codebase and all editions can be updated simultaneously.
Thanks to the shared codebase, SCS have said that the probability for the currently developing American Truck Simulator to be launched on all three platforms simultaneously is ‘very high’ as ATS will be running on the same game engine and base code as ETS2.
The Mac edition for now, will only be launched on Steam as SCS are not currently sure whether or not the title will be made available through the Mac App Store. A reason for this is that applications released on the Mac App Store operate in sandbox causing the installation of mods to be problematic. Secondly, the Mac App Store has an unknown delay on releasing and updating applications, meaning that it would be difficult to keep all editions of the game in sync. Additionally, community-made mods will have the same compatibility with Mac OS X devices as they do with Windows; with a little tweaking, mods should work without a problem.
Starting from yesterday (January 29), the Mac OS X edition of ETS2 is available from Steam. Of course, if you had already purchased the game prior to the Mac OS X release, there is no need to repurchase, just install and have fun!
The updates and news of American Truck Simulator is something I will be keeping a close eye on, so let me know what you are excited for in the upcoming title down in the comments.
