Across Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360, Grand Theft Auto has reached the massive milestone of 45 million copies sold.
September 2013 was the release date of the PS3 and 360 editions where GTA5 soon became the most purchased game of the year, with US $1 Billion from sales within the first three days. Among the releases of Destiny, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Super Smash Bros. 4, GTA5 still managed to stay in the top 10 of 2014 sales- mostly thanks to the November re-release on Xbox One and Playstation 4 consoles.
To put it into perspective, 45 million is roughly the population of Australia, Czech Republic and Portugal combined meaning that there would be one copy of the game for each citizen of those three countries. This being said, the figure covers the amount of units sold to stores, not units sold to customers, though it is only a matter of time until all present copies sold to stores are sold on to customers.
The upcoming PC release in March will likely bring a few million more purchased copies to that statistic, possibly pushing to the 50 million units sold milestone.
