Miitomo, Nintendo's first foray into the smartphone app side of development will shut down in May, just over two years after its launch, Nintendo revealed today.
From May 9th, users will no longer be able to use any features, see saved Miifotos or messages, or use any other social features. You will however, be able to save your Miitomo Mii by linking Miitomo with your Nintendo Account. Sidekick Miis will also be deleted.
No real reason was given for the shutdown, but we can hazard a guess that the lack of things to actually do in the app made it get stale rather quickly, even though it did see a surge to 10 million users in the first month of its release.
Nintendo did announce that while they are shutting this app down, they have no plans to abandon smartphone applications all together. Both Super Mario Run and Animal Crossing: Poclet Camp have performed fairly well, and Nintendo intend "to release two to three apps per year alongside developers DeNA. Nintendo is also hoping to partner with more mobile developers in the future.
While its sad that Miitomo is closing, the future is bright for mobile minded Nintendo fans! We'll bring you the latest as we get it on their mobile offerings.
