Today I am bringing you a new weekly article. Expect these once a week covering some of the best (In my own personal opinion) Original Sound Tracks that games have to offer. These could be Indie games or AAA titles, it doesn’t matter. As a composer myself, I am constantly listening out for amazing songs in the gaming industry. I feel like these can be lost in all the game play and ignored, so I want to bring them to light for everyone who may have missed the brilliance of them. If you have a favourite OST then post below or holler at me on Twitter. Chances are I might not have heard of it and I could write my next article on it and mention you as the awesome person who showed me it.
My very first entry into the Top OST of the week has to be the soundtrack of “Bastion”. For those of you unaware, Bastion is an indie, action, RPG with a heavy emphasis on story telling. Not only is this game beautifully designed, but the sound track is phenomenal. Mixing old western blues with modern twists and Arabian/Eastern styles certainly makes for a very interesting OST. The composer of the sound track, “Darren Korb” seems to be rather unknown and came out of the blue, but props to you good sir, you have made a masterpiece!
The thing that struck me most about the sound track is how different and set apart than most other games it is. The whole mixing western blues with a more modern sound is inspired and not often explored, especially within games. Another thing that really shined about this album was how well it was made and completely took me by surprising coming from an indie game. One of the tracks that really show the bizarre nature of this sound track is “Terminal March”.
Another thing to mention is that this OST stands up on its own incredibly well. For those of you who are into your more obscure genres or are willing to give new things a try it would be totally worth listening to the whole OST and listen to it as the masterpiece it is. You wont regret it!
If I had to pick my top song out of the whole sound track it would have to be “Build That Wall”. The song is hauntingly beautiful and really stands out for me because of its simplistic nature. Sometimes all it takes is the simplicity of a good voice and a guitar to really talk to you.
The whole album is beautiful and I would recommend all of you to go buy the game and the sound track. For both the game and the sound track it is $24.98 (£16.98) on Steam. Equally if you just want the sound track you can purchase it from the website for $9.99 (£6.05) or from the Steam page.
