This week’s soundtrack of the week goes to Portal 2. A first-person puzzle-platformer made by Valve is set in a scientific testing facility. You play as the test subject named “Chell” and face various puzzles that involve using your portal gun which are set by the evil A.I. “GLaDOS”. Popular among the gaming community, Portal and Portal 2 have a massive following and are big names in the industry.
The Soundtrack was composed by Mike Morasky who is also known for composing the soundtracks to the Left 4 Dead series, Team Fortress 2, and the original Portal. An original track (“Want You Gone”) was written by Jonathan Coulton who is known for an original track in Left 4 Dead 2 and the original Portal.
Portal 2 holds a very dystopian and hopeless feeling through the soundtrack. This mixed with the over grown and broken feeling to the testing facilities makes for a highly immersive and well-made game. And the music (All 3+ hours of it) keeps to this dark undertone of hopelessness as you go through each level.
One of the most well-known songs among gamers and fans alike is “Want You Gone”
This comedy song is sung by the witty antagonist GLaDOS. Although quite different in a lot of ways compared to the rest of the soundtrack, a very dark and twisted humor lies beneath the surface of the song. To understand the twisted humor behind the song you’ll need to go and play Portal 2 and if you haven’t already, then shame on you, go buy Portal 2 and play it already!
Another great track in the soundtrack is “Reconstructing More Science”
As per the rest of the soundtrack, a very dystopian and hopeless feeling. The track is a masterpiece and is quite memorable out of the soundtrack. I’ll say it again; if you haven’t played Portal 2 you are seriously missing out. The game is fantastic and worth every single bit of praise it has.
