Bethesda have announced a standalone prequel to MachineGames' unexpected hit Wolfenstein: The New Order, revisiting the series' alternate vision of WW2.

The two-part mission takes place in 1946, and sees B.J. Blazkowicz infiltrating the titular Castle Wolfenstein and pursuing an archaeologist in a futile attempt to end the war. If you felt like there weren't enough creative means to dismember Nazis before now, executive producer Jerk Gustafsson has some good news.

“Diving back into the world of Wolfenstein has really been fun for us; we’ve enjoyed exploring the events leading up to The New Order. We think fans will really enjoy the story, all the action and, of course, jumping back into the combat with new weapons.”

Lovers of lengthy single-player shooters don't have too long to wait. You can buy Wolfenstein: The Old Blood from May 5th on PS4, Xbox One (digital only) and PC, for the reasonable sum of £14.99/$19.99.
