A brand new Netflix television series, “The Witcher” has been confirmed to be in production. While the production has nothing to do with game developer CD Projekt Red. It is based off the original eight books known as The Witcher Saga (which also inspired the game series) written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
Author Sapkowski, who does not profit from the video game series, will stand as a creative consultant for the Netflix series. “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories” he said during a press release, "staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing.”
In 2015, Polish Animation and Film Production studio, Platige Image, confirmed that they had a Witcher feature film planned for a 2017 release. Two years later, it seems as though a deal has come into play with Netflix, turning the world of The Witcher into a series.
Platige Image, will work with producers Sean Daniel (The Mummy, Ben-Hur, The Expanse) and Jason Brown (The Expanse) as well as Platige’s Tomasz BagiÅ„ski who directed all three of the intro cinematics for The Witcher game series.
In a press release, BagiÅ„ski and colleague Jarek Sawko said that “There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books that goes beyond the genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.”
Platigue have unfortunately not given any hints as to who might act in the series but I am looking forward to see who they will have play Geralt of Rivia.
Last September, Poczta Polska, Poland’s postage service began issuing a Witcher 3 postage stamp celebrating the success of the game series. Read more here.
