tinyBuild Still Doing Cool Things With Twitch

By Sam Murray on 29/04/2024 21:52 UTC

tinyBuild, in my opinion, are probably the coolest games publisher out there right now. They give out keys to content creators that they know are passionate without raising hurdles, they 'get' Twitch, they 'get' creative content, they 'get it', whatever 'it' really is. Probably something to do with marketing.

They saw a great success with making a special version of Punch Club, allowing for Twitch chat to directly interact with the game. It was a really neat concept, it neatly captured the cult feel of TwitchPlaysPokemon and gave relatively free promotion to the title. The promotion was so overwhelmingly successful that the game was completed within 36 hours instead of the expected 8 days. This is despite the typically trolly chaos that ensues whenever chat gets to choose how things roll.

Now, they're looking to recapture this success again with their new title, One Troll Army. Honestly, the game doesn't look stunning. But it looks like a good spot of fun, effectively a defense game where you build up a fortress, raise troops to help defend it while marauding around as an enormous troll slapping seven shades out of attacking soldier.

The hook here, is how they're launching the game. Tomorrow (Thursday May 19th) at 9am EST, there will be a 9 hour stream (located here) where Twitch chat can become the attackers and attempt to slaughter the devs. Every time chat wins a wave, the price of the game drops. There's no limit on this, if chat gets behind this in the same way as they did Punch Club, the game could go out for free. Zero. Zilch. 0 dollars and 0 cents.

Now, admittedly they are going to sell some purely cosmetic items as DLC in the future, but that's a pretty interesting strategy in anyone's book. This, combined with the fact that tinyBuild will be dishing out keys to content creators as per usual, is guaranteed to whip up a lot of attention for what is effectively a small indie title.

You can check out a gameplay video below that will give you a rough idea of what to expect from the game. Now, imagine that with chat blowing up from folks yearning to get a free game. Yeah, I'll see you there too.
