US to Relinquish Control over Internet to ICANN

By David West on 29/04/2024 21:50 UTC

The Washington Post reports the US Government has announced it will be relinquishing control over the Internet to ICANN, the international body.

Unfortunately, due to restrictions by the Washington Post, we can only post the article link and cannot quote from the article itself. However, Lawrence Strickling did state at a press conference, "We look forward to ICANN convening stakeholders across the global Internet community to craft an appropriate transition plan."

Expect opposition to this move to come from the US Chamber of Commerce and its allies in Congress. EFF and other advocates of Net Neutrality will need to address ICANN instead of the FCC if the transition happens, which may be harder to do considering countries not believing in the freedom of speech and press being members of the body.
