World of Warcraft has reached a subscriber level of 7.7 million, a level not seen since 2007. As more games come out on the market, WoW has been feeling the heat as people slowly move away from the 'gold standard' of massive multiplayer online role playing games. Many see this as an opportunity, with up and coming MMOs putting out press saying they are poised to do great as WoW loses people. However, it could be argued WoW is shedding fair weather fans and keeping their hard core base, meaning it will be harder and harder to peel away people as time continues.
WoW is being pressured by a rise in two other competing genres - MOBA, the massively online battle arenas like League of Legends, SMITE, and soon to be released Infinite Crisis, as well as the first person shooter MMOs like Planetside 2, Firefall, Defiance, and soon Titanfall. With Wildstar, Elder Scrolls Online, EQ Next and other new traditional-style MMOs being released in the next several months, how do you think WoW will fair against the additional competition?
