Zelda Wii U Pushed Back to 2016, No-Show At E3

In another setback for the Wii U, Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has explained that the upcoming Zelda title will be delayed until next year.

The news comes in a special development diary video from Nintendo, embedded below. In it Aonuma explains that the new open world format has yielded more and more ideas, which the team wants to spin into extra gameplay features, pushing it beyond the initial release date.

We are no longer making our 2015 release our number one priority. Instead, our priority is to make it the most complete and ultimate Zelda game.

A tweet from Nintendo of America confirmed that the game won't be shown at E3 either. It's not yet known whether Nintendo will have a traditional stage show this year, or continue with their pre-show Nintendo Direct stream.

While taking extra time to polish games in the current money-grubbing climate is admirable, the move is another blow for the beleagured Wii U as it continues to rely on first party titles. All eyes now turn to the anticipated squid turf wars of Splatoon this May.
